Historic Drone Flight Over Michigan’s Capitol

On May 19, 2025, Westwood AI, a technology firm based in Rockford, Michigan, achieved a significant milestone by conducting the first authorized drone flight over the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing. This event, part of a weeklong drone symposium, aimed to demonstrate the practical applications of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to state lawmakers and officials. A Historic Demonstration The Capitol Commission approved this unprecedented drone flyover to showcase the capabilities of drones in real-time scenarios. Westwood AI utilized a high-definition drone to execute a custom flight path over the Capitol, capturing a series of images that were then used to construct a detailed 3D model of the building. This demonstration highlighted the potential of drones in infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, and public safety operations. Bridging Technology and Public Policy Dakota Greenman, founder of Westwood AI and a former senior intelligence analyst for the U.S. Air Force, led the presentation. Drawing from his military experience, Greenman emphasized the importance of integrating emerging technologies like drones into public safety and homeland security frameworks. He discussed Westwood AI’s collaborations, including participation in a trade mission to Brazil and partnerships with the Michigan Air National Guard, underscoring the state’s potential to lead in the global drone market. Addressing Challenges and Opportunities The symposium also addressed the challenges associated with UAS technology, such as the need for skilled personnel and robust regulatory frameworks. Lawmakers engaged in discussions about the dual nature of drone applications, recognizing their benefits in enhancing operational efficiencies across various sectors while also acknowledging potential risks. The event underscored the importance of careful oversight and regulation to harness the full potential of drone technology. Looking Ahead This historic drone flight over Michigan’s Capitol represents a significant step in integrating drone technology into state operations. As the demand for UAS applications continues to grow, Michigan positions itself at the forefront of innovation, exploring how drones can enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability across various industries.
